November 16th, 2008

Context clues are when people use phrases and words to help the reader to understand a new word. These phrases and words are put around the new word.  There are four different types of context clues:

1.Definition or Restatement

Example: Small children become cantankerous, or bad-tempered…

2.Examples or Summaries

Example: People that are pugnacious tend to argue a lot, just like Jit

3.Comparison and Contrast

Example: People who watch hours of TV non-stop may feel soporific unlike people who have a healthy lifestyle

4.Cause and Effect

Example: His lack of aspiration in school caused him to get bad grades

Word Part Analysis is when you use the Prefixes and Suffixes of a word to help you understand the definition of the word.

1. Prepare=To make ready beforehand for a certain purpose
